Does it really keep the doctor’s away?
By: Marlene Acosta
Should aspirin
be taken once a day, every day? According to CNN News, the infamous theory that
it could keep the doctor away is actually the other way around. Dr. Salim
Virani an author of the study and a cardiologist and assisting professor of medicine
at Baylor College, said that “it can cause gastroin testinal bleeding vicers
and the most dreaded place where (there is bleeding) inside the brain.” Also it
is said that an unneeded regimen of aspirin a day can make your blood too thin which
can be a risk at surgeries. It should only be taken if you have had a heart
attack or any heart problems. Yet, you still have to be careful. Please consult
a doctor and verify if you should take a daily dose or not.
Bourbon Virus
By: Karen Marrero
A new virus has been discovered in Kansas when the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) figured that a man died from it. The virus, named Bourbon, got its name from the county where the patient lived. CDC says that the older man received more than enough the amount of tick bites in the spring. After three days of being hospitalized, the man was experiencing symptoms like rash, fever, aches all over the body, tiredness, and vomiting. On the 11th day, the man suffered a heart attack and died. Before his death, the man was tested with a large variety of infectious diseases but they all came back negative. This leads to the conclusion that the virus is likely to spread by tick or insect bites. By wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellents, and avoiding wooded areas, you can protect yourself from the Bourbon virus. Be cautious at all times because it is known to be very contagious!

You Need Sleep!
By: Nathali Chalita
The cumulative amount of screen time a teen gets throughout the day - not just before bed time - affects how long they sleep. "One of the suprising aspects was the very clear dose - response associations" said study's lead researcher Mary Hysing, a researcher and a psychologist at uni research Health. A research company based in Norway. "The longer their screen time, the shorter their screen time, their shorter their sleep duration." For the study, the researchers collected data from more than 9,800 teenagers, ages 16 to 19 who participated in a survey on their use of electronics and their sleep habits, including bed time, sleep duration, and how long it took for them to fall asleep. The researchers found that boys and girls tended to use different types of devices. Boys spending more time with game consoles, where as girls favored smart phones and MP3 music players. Nearly all teens in the study said they used their devices within an hour of going to bed, and those who used electronics before bedtime were more likely to need more than 1 hour to fall asleep, the researchers found. Lack of sleep can seriously affect everyones health. Therefore, let's put the devices away and get a good night's rest.
Too Much Protein In Middle Age
As Bad As Smoking
By: Kevin Ordaz
Two new studies conclude that low protein intake may hold the key to a long and healthy life, at least until old age. While a high-protein diet may, in the short term, help people lose weight and body fat, in the long term it may harm health and reduce lifespan. The first study, led by a professor at the University of Southern California by the name of Valter Longo, showed that high protein consumption is linked to increased risk of cancer, diabetes, and death in middle aged adults. The second study was led by Stephen Simpson, a professor at the University of Sydney, who works in the field of physiology, ecology, and behavior. From studying mice,he concluded that diets low in protein and high carbohydrates are linked to the longest lifespans. Both of these studies suggest it is not just calories, but also diet composition - particularly in terms of amount and type of protein - that may determine the length and health of a lifespan.

Medicinal Cannabis
By: Marlene Acosta
“Pain is the main reason people ask for prescription”, says Barth Wilsey, MD and a pain specialist in the California Davis Medical Center. Many people have wondered why and what is medicinal marijuana used for. For a while now most people have been trying to decide whether medicinal cannabis should be legalized in most of the United States. Doctors prescribe the medicinal marijuana to patients with muscle spasms, and those who suffer from nausea due to chemotherapy, poor appetite or weight loss caused by chronic illness, such as HIV or nerve pain, seizure disorders, or chronic disease. The cannabis can be a great benefit to patients with these unfortunate diseases, but it does have quite a variety of side effects. The following side effects would include: Dizziness, short term memory loss, drowsiness and euphoria. There’s many ways to consume medicinal marijuana, which would include: smoking, vaporizing, eating it (usually in cookies or candy), or taken as a liquid extract. According to m.WebMD.com the FDA approved THC, a key ingredient in marijuana to treat nausea and improve appetite. “Since the body already makes marijuana-like chemicals that affects pain, inflammation, and many other processes, Marijuana can sometimes help those natural chemicals work better”, Laura Borgelt, PharmD , of the University of Colorado. The following states have legalized it for medicinal purposes only: California, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Even though these states have it legalized, they all have different laws on how much of the marijuana can be prescribe and grown.

The Effects of Coca-Cola
By: Christian Nuñez
Coca-Cola is a soft drink that many people love, but most people do not know how bad Coca-Cola is for your body. Coke acts as an acidic cleaner; it removes grease stains from clothing and fabric, removes rust. Coke will bring a high shine to aluminum foil. Studies show that after 10 minutes of drinking Coke the sugar contained in a glass of cola can cause a devastating “strike” on the body. After 20 minutes, ingestion of caffeine is finally completed. The eye’s pupil is expanding. Blood pressure rises because the liver deposes more sugar into the bloodstream. The adenosine receptor becomes blocked thereby preventing drowsiness. After 45 minutes, the body raises production of the dopamine hormone, which stimulates the brain pleasure center, similar to the reaction Heroin creates. After 1 hour, phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, which supercharges metabolism. The release of calcium through urine takes place. After more than 1 hour at this time, one can become irritable or subdued. The whole quantity of water, contained in Coca-Cola is removed through urination. The next time you take a sip of Coca-Cola think of what is happening to your body. If our body consist of 70% of water, that should be the healthiest choice of beverage.

The Effect of Tanning on Your Skin
By: Jennifer Pastor
Getting too much sun could be very damaging. If you get too much sun you are at risk of developing Melanoma is when you get dark brown or black lumps all over your skin. People love going to the beach and getting that Hawaiian tan that everyone loves. What people are not noticing is that they’re putting their health at risk. Also, what many people don’t know is that the older you get the more likely you are to get a non-Melanoma skin cancer. Non-Melanoma skin cancer refers to all the types of cancer that occur in the skin that are not Melanoma. There are three main types of skin cancer: Basal Carcinoma, Squamous cell, and Melanoma. Basal Carcinoma usually appears on the exposed body parts and it’s very small. Squamous cell typically develops on all parts of the face, and Melanoma is the most dangerous one. Melanoma usually appears as if it was a dark brown or black lump that could appear at any part of the body and it could be fatal. With summer coming up, it is very important to be aware of the dangers of sun exposure. To avoid those problems you can always wear a long sleeve shirt, hats, sunscreen of at least SPF 30 and higher. Enjoy the summer safely!

Small screens in the bedroom
People that are strict vegans or vegetarians are at risk of developing a B-12 deficiency. Cobalt is an essential component of the structure of B-12. This component is needed to ensure the proper functioning of all cells in the body. The average adult needs 2.4 micrograms of B-12 per day. Insufficient intake of cobalt and vitamin B-12 can cause anemia.
Small screens in the bedroom
hinder children's sleep
By: Mijamin De Armas
Thanks to this past holiday season many children have received gifts in the form of a smart phone or other devices with small screens. New studies have shown that children who sleep with a small screen are more likely to get inadequate sleep. Devices with small screens give children wide access to the internet, texts, and email at almost any given time they wish. Previous studies have linked TV viewing reduced sleep duration. Devices with a small screen have an even more disruptive effect since they are typically held close to the face. Shorter sleep duration leads to health problems. Some of the health problems caused by inadequate sleep are obesity, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. Getting adequate sleep can have a positive impact n psychological health and school performance. Unfortunately studies have shown that the sleep duration of children has declined steadily over the course of the past century. Hopefully these studies will give parents a reason to get their children to put certain holiday gifts away.

The Health Benefits Of Cobalt
By: Mijamin DeArmas
People that are strict vegans or vegetarians are at risk of developing a B-12 deficiency. Cobalt is an essential component of the structure of B-12. This component is needed to ensure the proper functioning of all cells in the body. The average adult needs 2.4 micrograms of B-12 per day. Insufficient intake of cobalt and vitamin B-12 can cause anemia.
The main reason why vegans would be deficient in cobalt is because it is inly found in animal proteins. The richest sources are organ meats, oysters, clams, poultry and milk. It is important to consume the right amount of cobalt as well. Excessive consumption of cobalt can cause an overproduction of red blood cells. This is why it is important to have a diet with a variety instead of concentrating on individual nutrients.
